William and Madeleine live in a town at the foot of mountains. Married for a long time, faithful to each other and in love, they lead a quiet life. Their only child, Elise, moving to Italy, they have nobody but themselves to look out for. During one of her walks in the surrounding hills, Madeleine sets up her easel in front of an old house and meets Adam, a refined, well-read and blind man. He offers to let Madeleine visit the house she is painting, which is for sale. It’s love at first sight. William and Madeleine buy it. In the weeks following the sale, William and Madeleine are in a state of bliss. They organize their new life with Adam and his young companion Eva which house is close to theirs. The day Adam and Eva's house burns down, William and Madeleine want nothing more than to play host their new friends…

William et Madeleine habitent en ville au pied des montagnes.
Mariés depuis longtemps, fidèles et amoureux, ils ont une vie rangée.
Leur fille unique partant vivre en Italie, ils n’ont plus qu’à s’occuper d’eux-mêmes.

Au cours d’une de ses promenades sur les collines environnantes, Madeleine installe son chevalet devant une vieille maison et rencontre Adam, un homme fin, cultivé et aveugle. Il lui fait visiter la maison qu’elle est en train de peindre : elle est à vendre. C’est le coup de foudre, William et Madeleine l’achètent.

Les semaines qui suivent l’achat, William et Madeleine vivent une période de grand bonheur.
Leur nouvelle vie s’organise dans la proximité d’Adam et de sa jeune compagne Eva qui habitent à quelques centaines de mètres. Le jour où la maison de leurs nouveaux amis brûle, William et Madeleine n'ont plus d'autre désir que de les héberger…
